Fast Overview
How visible are you?
Have
you even measured how visible you are? Or how hard it is for
your customers to find you? You will probably get an unpleasant
surprise. No wonder you get such few "hits"!
You
will be pleasantly surprised (most of the time) at how badly
your competitors are organized. This is one area where you can
leap ahead.
We
have developed methodologies for measuring web sites:- both
yours and your competitors. Then we diagnose your weaknesses
and the comparative strengths of your competitors. Now we can
turn this information into a successful plan to steal business
from them.
Improving your Visibility
To
start hitting the high rankings in a Search Engine you have
to do a number of things simultaneously and continuously. Here
is our approach (compare it to what you or your ISP are currently
doing).
Choosing the Target Search Engines and Directories
We
select the optimum number of Search Engines and Directories
to maximize the traffic to your site. The selection is be based
on;
The
Search Engines and Directories selected in this way will provide
the benchmark for the optimization of the Meta-data so that
the development can proceed in a structured and coherent way.
(This is the Starting point, the submission campaign will include
many more Engines and Directories than those selected in this
way.)
Meta tags
Meta
tags must be tuned and adjusted to reflect the content of each
page. The Meta tags include Keywords, Description, Title
and Comments and other meta tags as appropriate.
Additional Meta tags are becoming important to communicate the
true meaning of the content to the Engine. Make sure you are
addressing this issue!
Since
the Search Engines rank the pages according to more than just
the Meta tags, the optimizing will be extended to the Headings,
Image tags and Alt descriptions, the first sentence
in the body text and the hyperlink descriptions.
Each
Search Engine gives a higher ranking to pages with their own
specific keyword frequency and weighting in the
meta tags, body text and the combination of meta tags and body
text. The content of the pages will be adjusted to maximize
the ranking.
Dropping
a few words into the Keywords tag is just not going to achieve
results!
Keyword Optimization
Keywords
and Phrases have vastly different potential to draw traffic
to your site. Before final selection of keywords for the meta
tags, the "candidate" words will be checked against
an appropriate Search Engine "traffic volume" database
so that the final selection will maximize the traffic.
If
you can choose between a word that generates 500 hits a month
and one that generates 50,000 per month, which one is better
for you? The answer may depend on your circumstances and the
quality of traffic that will result, but at least now you have
the resources to make the right decision.
You
can see that without someone (like us) guiding you through the
process, your words may be far from optimized!
Overcoming Barriers to Visibility
We
can anticipated and overcome the technical barriers to Search
Engines successfully indexing your site. These include certain
coding techniques, Frames, ASP, CFM, database derived content
and script in the header. Your web developer is concentrating
on delivering the functionality. Optimizing visibility requires
a fresh look at the code.
Perform
a reality check! Ask your current web master or developer about
these issues. (Then talk to us.)
Tuning Pages for Keywords
Each
Search Engine has it's own peculiarities and preferences. The
major Search Engines that are responsible for most of the volume
(currently 18), should have pages specifically tuned for them
for each of the main keywords. These purpose-built pages will
have the same look and feel of your site but will serve the
purpose of ranking as high as possible in the results for each
query and bringing traffic to the appropriate place in the web
site.
The
current wisdom is that to rank lower than 30 (i.e. 3 pages on
most Engines), is as good as being INVISIBLE. Without specially
tuned pages, how are you going to rank that high?
Preparation of Meta Data for Directories
Certain
Directories require special content and text when submitting
to them. The content has to meet very specific requirements
before their editors will review it. We will draft this for
you and attend to the submission.
Designing a Submission campaign
Now
comes the interesting part. When you first built your web site,
you probably noticed traffic from Search Engines. Over the months
it failed to grow or even fell away. What went wrong?
A
single submission produces very limited results with most Search
Engines since spiders and indexing are erratic and inconsistent.
They also modify their own algorithms to defeat perceived spamming
techniques.
A properly designed campaign will overcome these difficulties.
We can draft and implement the plan on your behalf.
Why
not hand it over to a staff member? Yes, you could do that (and
we will take your money for training them). But there are risks.
Your own staff have other higher priorities, and seldom have
we seen a campaign implemented consistently and diligently when
it is their least important task of the day. You will
be setting yourself up for failure.
Continuous Improvement
The
continued improvement of site visibility requires meaningful
feedback from searcher activity. The methods to achieve this
should be incorporated into the pages of the site so that the
results are accurate and useful. We measure the activity and
provide regular reports so you can take action to optimize your
site.
Do you need us?
If
you can do all of the above, learn the methods and skills, download
the tools, consistently apply them (daily or you're wasting
your time), then NO, you don't need us.
But
shouldn't you be doing something more useful with your time
and out-sourcing this function to us? Our clients agree that
we take a lot of pain out of their system.
